Ep 6: Perforative Mothering - A Catalyst for disconnection
/

Aja digs into performative mothering to explore what falls under its umbrella, how it impacts you and what you can begin doing to heal from it. Aja identifies 2 aspects of performative mothering:

  1. Mom acting one way outside of the home and a different way inside of the home (with the child)
  2. Mom teaching requiring you to perform in order to be loved, accepted, respected

With each aspect, Aja discusses how detrimental these are on a child’s life and how they can be carried into adulthood. These impacts are:

  • Lack of trust in self / thinking you’re crazy
  • Lack of trust in others
  • Not knowing what you desire
  • Depression
  • Anger and it being used against you
  • Erosion of self-confidence (or it never being developed)
  • People pleasing / Co-dependency

In the practice session segment, Aja reveals 3 steps you can begin taking immediately to reconnect with yourself and learn to trust and honor yourself as you step away from performing your authentic self.
